Wedding Ceremonies and Wedding Photo Shoots

We provide particular historical places for the wedding ceremonies. Couples can have their wedding ceremony in one of Hungary's most beautiful late renaissance castle, in the former centre of the Rakoczis. The newly married couple can bundle their life in the Noble Library, in the Temple of Muses, on the Castle Court or in the Castle Garden.

A Particular day must be photographed in a magnificent milieu. Choose the building complex or/and the surrounding castle garden of the Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum to make Your wedding photos extraordinary. " One of the star guests of the opening concert and of the festival is Erika Miklósa. She gave a memorable concert callaed " Mozart in a different way " here in 2006. The soprano has been celebrated on all the significant opera stages of the world as Queen of the Night in the Magic Flute. With over 300 performances behind her she is the most sought after singer for this role. Despite her full calendar she accepted the invitation to Sárospatak and she will sing two coloratura arias. The concert will be introduced by Erkel's rarely played, Patriotic Festive Overture. The composition is mostly based on melodies from his earlier works and the elements of recruitment dances and it is rounded up by the famous tune from fellow composer Béni Egressy's "Szózat". In the second half of the concert the festival's orchestra will play Dvorák's most popular Symphony No 9. "From the New World". The piece- despite its title- is inspired by Czech national folklore , while the indian melody evokes the master's memories of his three years in America. "

The Family Andrássy- New Periodical Exhibition

The Andrássy family deriving from Csíkszentkirály and Krasznahorka is one of Hungary's oldest families. According to the family's tradition András,- the legendary fencing champion living in Saint Stephen king's court- is mentioned to be their earliest ancestor. Members of the family have been appearing in the sources regularly since the 13th century. Simon escorted King Endre II. in the crusade to the Holy Land. Zsigmond Andrássy fought on the side of King Lajos the Great in Naples. János Szapolyai presented Márton with Csíkszentkirály in 1569, - from where one of the surname of the family came. Márton's son Péter -springing from the Hungarian Kingdom- received Krasznahorka in 1585.
Mátyás Andrássy marrying Anna Monoky obtained Monok. The family Monoky rose to a significant participant between the nobility of the counties in the 14th century. János Monoky, - a well-to-do land owner built the renaissance style castle of Monok between 1570-1580. After the extinction of the male branch of the Andrássy family in 1643; the female wing of the Andrássys and Thökölys inherited the respectable domain of Monok. Miklós,-the son of Anna Monoky and Mátyás Andrássy – became a baron in 1676 and also worked as a Lord Lieutenant of county Gömör. István, one of his seven sons, built the castle of Betlair, so the Betlair line of the family derives from him. The Monok branch of the family came from the younger brother, György. Members of this large family, István, György, Pál and Miklós served as outstanding generals and commanders in the armies of Ferenc Rákóczi II. , while Péter served the emperor in Vienna. István Andrássy's castle of Krasznahorka and the memories of the freedom fights have been hatched through the times. Miklós Bercsényi,- the chief general of the Kuruts troops, the president of the senate,- camped in Monok for several days in August, 1706. He also reported on this occasion to the Prince in letters.
After the freedom fights György Andrássy was zealous about the economical development of the country. He was the president of the Economic Society and the Upper Hungarian Society of Miners. He wrote interesting articles about vinery, the London whool market and the perfection of mining techniques.
György also founded the double-centre fee-tail in Monok and Krasznahorka-váralja in 1867. In the Betlair -wing of the family the wife of Károly Andrássy founded an estate tail for his son Manó in Parnó, for Gyula in Terebes and for Aladár in Homonna in 1874.
After the death of György Andrássy, his son Dénes became the owner of the lands of Monok, Krasznahorka, Csetnek, Lazony, and Dernő. The fee-tail of Monok included 8654 acres of plough-land and vineyard, 2047 acres of meadow, 3255 acres of grazing ground and 1585 5/8 acres of forest. The whole value of these lands with the king's usufruct was estimated 840 000 'new' forints.
However the father of Dénes Andrássy wanted his son to be a diplomat, he was enthusiastic about fine arts and literature and became one of the noble humanists of his age. His family never accepted his marriage with Franciska Hablawetz,- an actress from Vienna, but the count was happy anyway. They lived a quiet life patronizing art from the income of his possessions, practiced charity and established foundations. The charity he made was estimated for millions of forints. He also supported the functioning of the Scientific Academy with 20.000 crown and was also elected to be a member of the directorate of the Hungarian Scientific Academy in 1906. One of his favourite places to stay was Krasznahorka-váralja where he also built a picture gallery for his famous collection of art and raised a mausoleum for his beloved wife. However Dénes Andrássy cared less about farming, he lead his lands by skilled experts.
With his death of 1913 the male line of descents of the Andrássy family from Monok died out. Count Aladár Széchenyi, --the first born son of Erzsébet Andrássy- the younger sister of Dénes-- inherited the fee-tail of Monok. Count Ferenc Maldeghem,-the son of Dénes's sister, Mary- received the estate of Krasznahorka. The two inheritors also put the separation agreement of the fee-tails of Monok and Krasznahorka-váralja down in writing. Even the library held in Krasznahorka was passed into the hands of Aladár Széchenyi. The new owner of the fee-tail of Monok could take over a farm surpassing its age. Sugar-beet,- being the most important agricultural crop was yielded with under-pipe irrigation plants. Narrow-gauge railway connected the agricultural units and transported the sugar -beet to the sugar works of Szerencs.
Gyula Andrássy worked as a diplomat at the time of the freedom fights. He was forced to emigrate after 1849. He could only return home after he received mercy in 1861. He joined the political life and paved the way for the Hungarian Conciliation with Ferenc Deák. His designetion to Prime Minister meant the birth of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1867. From 1871 he was the common Foreign Minister of the Dual Monarchy and was also considered to be one of the most talented diplomats in Europe. His mausoleum stands in Trebisov (present Slovakia).
His son Gyula also being a Home Secretary became a famous figure of the national public life. After the oppressive political life of the 1849's the change happened in 1860 as the autonomy of the comitats were restored and new Lord Lieutants were appointed. Manó Andrássy became the Lord Lieutant of county Zemplén. The political situation changed as the emperor prohibited every kind of county-assemblies in October 1861. Soon after the whole staff of Zemplén county officers and Manó Andrássy resigned.
The Betliar line of descents of the family Andrássy carried on the name in the 20th century. The family remained a determinant participant of the political, economical and social life of the country. They made journeys studying the new technical improvements, became acquainted with different cultures or simply payed homage to hunting. While having huge forests with stock of game in their game parks- even fallow-deer or moufflon- the Andrássys also hunted on their private lands with pleasure. Huntings in Szádvár were famous across the country while aristocrats of the era from inlands and abroad visited these occasions. The younger generation of the family Andrássy were also separated. The offsprings of Manó tweeted with county Gömör, Betlair, while the descendants of Gyula and Aladár ; Tivadar and Gyula and Sándor spent their childhood and youth and later lived their life on their estates in county Zemplén.

As the Turkish era passed, peaceful decades came in the 18th century, right after the Rákóczi freedom fights. The reformation of the social-economical relations of the feudal Hungary came in the 19th century. Pál Nagy Felsőbüki recommended to establish an academic society to protect the Hungarian language. István Széchenyi offered his one year income to this noble purpose. Many aristocrats followed his precedent, even György Andrássy,- legate of Gömör county, the owner of Monok - offered some money. Founding the Hungarian Science Academy- in which institute he was a director until his death - György gave 10.000 forints. Ferenc Kölcsey considered him one of the greatest supporter of the Hungarian reform movements. In the castle of György Andrássy illustrious members of the parliament met frequently. In a German leaflet he compeled himself to support the reformed ideas in 1833. He travelled to England with István Széchenyi to make preparations for the Chain Bridge to be built. They also reported on this event in Hungarian and German. György also made parts of the bridge in his steelworks of Dernő. At the time of the Budapest flood of 1838 he rescued the ones got in trouble and helped the damged.
The other, Betlair branch of the family became known both nation-wide and internationally in the 19th century. Károly Andrássy was a member of the Hungarian Liberal Opposition Movement and also member of the parliament. In the parliament of 1839/40 he delivered a patriotic speech in the case of Kossuth. He published in the Pesti Hírlap (Newspaper of Pest), became the chairman of the control of the River Tisza and entered the Protection Society. His sons Manó and Gyula became the members of reformed oppositions. In the parliament of 1847/48 Manó participated as the envoy of Torna, while Gyula took part as a legate of county Zemplén. Aladár, the youngest son fought on the side of Bem in the Transylvanian troops in the freedom fights. The domain Monok -divided between the inheritors -got united in the hands of the family Andrássy in the 18th century again. Reconstruction of the 'little castle' can be connected to them in 1730-40.
Not much later István Andrássy started to build a much more comfortable and imposing castle which was completed in 1770. In the basement of its sidewing he built a chapel with a ceiling fresco. The relic of Saint Orbán brought from Rome was kept in this chapel. The rococo wall-paintings of the ceremonial hall upstairs is one of the splendid fine-art masterpieces of the 18th century Hungary. The baroque castle was later rebuilt in classicist style in the 19th century.
Mining of good quality iron ore already begun on the Andrássy-lands of Gömör and Torna in the 18th century. Both charcoal and brown coal was available for smelting and refinement. Both lines of descents of the Andrássys espoused the matter of iron manifacture. Particularly György Andrássy made special efforts in improving metallurgy in the first part of the 19th century. The ironworks of Dernő which he received as a family inheritance,- is in the family's possession from 1758. It was renovated by Mrs István Andrássy in 1817- was rebuilt as a model factory. The iron cross found in front of the roman catholic church of Monok was also made there. On the expo of 1855 his works received a silver medal. Beside the production of fancy and customer goods and crude iron ( he also transported iron for rail wheels to the Ganz factory), he also joined the rail business.
He soon became the president and leading shareholder of the Tiszai Ironways Society.
Likewise his ancestor Károly Andrássy did many things to improve the mining and manufacturing industry. He also published a book on iron factories. On his trip to Belgium of 1845 he studied the iron and engine factories. Manó,-his oldest son- was also known as the „iron count”. The venture he made in 1880 (bought and rented factories ) it became the 5th greatest iron factory of the country as they produced one-third of the whole crude iron production. On six of his furnace works eight blast-furnaces operated. By this time Manó rented the cultivated great modern factory of Dernő from Dénes Andrássy. After the death of Manó, his son Géza sold the Andrássy-Iron-Works to the Rimamurány-Salgótarján Steelworks Corporation.

NEW STAMP RELEASES- THE TREASURES OF HUNGARIAN MUSEUMS

" With the purpose of showing the collections of Hungarian museums the Hungarian Post is starting the issue of a new special stamp series. In 2011 the treasures of the Hungarian National Museum’s Rákóczi Museum in Sárospatak and the Hungarian Museum of Engineering and Transport’s Várpalota Museum of Chemistry are being placed on stamps.

The Rákóczi Museum operates as an affiliate of the Hungarian National Museum in Sárospatak. The castle of the Rákóczi family is today the most significant Rákóczi-linked location in Hungary, more than one hundred thousand people visit it every year. The permanent exhibition of the “golden age of the Rákóczi family” is the most detailed and the richest collection in the subject with regards to artefacts. Among the permanent exhibitions it is important to mention the exhibition on grape growing and wine making. (Source: spatak.hu)
The following objects and motifs of the Rákóczi Museum in Sárospatak appear on the HUF 280 stamp, from left to right: a stove tile made by the Haban potters settled in town quarter known as Héce by György Rákóczi I (17th c.); the building of the Rákóczi castle: the inner castle courtyard with the red Tower (16th c.) and the Lorántffy lodge; Head of the angel from the north gate of the Old Palace (16th c.); a product from the glassworks established by Ferenc Rákóczi II, a thread-decorated glass jug (19th c.); a shark-decorated glass with the coat of arms of the Mikes family (1682) and also from the glassworks established by Ferenc Rákóczi II a glassworks glass (18th c.). "

„Hemző gained a reputation as a sports photographer in the Hungarian press of the 50's. His whole career has been in photojurnalism, despite the fact that he has also taken gastronomic pictures and public knows him best for his excellent food photography. Yet Hemző consideres himself, first and foremost a chronicler of historic events great and small. His oeuvre spans several decades and consists of numerous subjects and styles from sports photography, reports on artistic events and pictures of the city, to his famous pictures of horses. He is a significant figure in the history of Hungarian photography, not just as a creative artist, but also as a picture editor and as an active contributor to Hungarian photography over a long period. „

In this exhibition one can mainly enjoy his black & white pictures of the city, Budapest.

„It is no coincidence that in late 2010 Károly Hemző chose his pictures of the capital as the basis for his latest exhibition entitled HEMZŐTOWN. Even after his 1983 exhibition, his curiosity regarding Budapest and its inhabitants did not cease. He still photographed the everyday events of the city in the new millenium whenever his legs and lungs allowed. His oeuvre of several decades offeres historians much to research, nostalgic feelings for the ordinary man in the street, lessons for the younger generation and a great deal for aesthetes and historians of photography to appriciate. The pictures of seemingly banal and ordinary street scenes, even the deserted sqares and streets, tell complex and human stories, difficult to put into words, yet offering a totality”.

„ The HEMZŐTOWN exhibition is an unusual one. It is a celebration. The occasion behind it is that the photographer, Károly Hemző, has donated several tens of thousands of his photographs to the Hungarian National Museum Historic Photograph Archive- vintage copies, negatives, slides – as well as his cameras, lenses and over five decades worth of documents on his career. As owners of the majority oevrue, the HNM with this special exhibition is trying to give a taste of the rich fruit of this long career, to honour the master's oevrue and the gestuge he has made in donating his collection. Several hundred colour slides depiciting city life had already been acquired by the Budapest collection at the Szabó Ervin Library. However, Hemzőtown is not some kind of protocol exhibition. The 82-year-old artist selected pictures from his large collection with a fresh eye. Besides some that are already familiar or can now perhaps be considered classics, there are many on the walls that the public will not have seen up to now. „ - by Klára Szarka. -

The Kosice gold treasure

The Kosice gold treasure is composed of 2,920 gold coins, three medals, a Renaissance gold chain, and a copper casket.

It was discovered on 24th August 1935 during the reconstruction of the building of the financial directorate at Hlavná Street in the historical center of the town. In the 17th century this building served as the seat of the Spis Chamber, which was managing the financial matters in this part of the country.

The gold treasure was probably hidden during one of the anti-Habsburg uprisings led by Emerich Thököly. Thököly's troops occupied the town in 1682 after several attempts. The time of hiding the teasure could be dated between 1679 and 1682, the issue of the newest coin and the year of the occupation. The treasure represented an enormous sum in its own time, thus the owner was probably a high-ranking official of the Spis Chamber, the centre of the Habsburg financial administration, the chairman or one of the counselors. Several persons are known by name, who might be connected to the treasure.

The coins of the treasure were common in the monetary circulation of contemporary Hungary. Hungarian, Transylvanian and Dutch coins constitute the largest share in the treasure, about 84 %, but there are also Bohemian, Silesian, Polish, German, Danish, Swedish, Italian, Austrian, Salzburg, Spanish issues to be found, and a modern imitation of an antique Thracian gold stater. The oldest coins of the find are gold florins of the Hungarian king, Sigismund of Luxemburg minted between 1402 and 1404, the newest ones are the ducats of King Leopold I., minted in 1679 in the Kremnica Mint, i.e. the difference between the minting of the oldest and the newest coins is about 277 years.

This treasure is one of the unique coin finds not only from the Carpathian Basin, but from all of Europe as well. It is in the property of the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava, and this is the first time it is exhibited in Hungary, in the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest.

The Dohnányi Orchestra has had an excellent relationship with the world famous violinist, Shlomo Mintz. This is not the first time that he plays at the Zemplen Festival and he was glad to have received the invitation of Gábor Hollerung to this occasion. At the opening concert he will play one of the most popular concertos originally composed for József Joachim by Brahms. Joachim wrote a brilliant cadenza to the 1st and 3rd movements of the piece, perfectly in line with the intentions of the composer. As tribute to the great Hungarian composer's anniversary year the concert will be opened by a masterpiece of the Hungarian national Romanticism, the overture of Erkel's opera, Hunyadi László. The piece splendidly joins the melodies of the opera one after the other following the traditions of Italian and European opera composition. Muszorgszkij's Pictures at an Exhibition , inspired by the exhibited paintings of the composer's great friend, Victor Hartmann is obviously abundant in picturesque images. The work was originally written for piano, but its symphonic dimensions had inspired many composers to set it to symphony orchestra.

Acquisitions by the Historical Collection of the Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum in the Last Decade

The collections of the Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum have increased considerably over the last ten years. The Historical Collection has been enriched by donations, purchases, collecting, and restoration.
Lajos Szathmáry bequeathed a special Kossuth collection to our museum in 1997 and 1999. In 2003, András Farkas donated personal effects owned by his father, Ferenc Farkas, to the Museum. These were then exhibited in the Ferenc Farkas Memorial Room created in that year. In 2003, Ferenc Bethlen presented the Museum with the scabbard of a ceremonial sabre that had belonged to an ancestor who had served the Rákóczis, and in the same year Ferenc Nagy donated a letter written by Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II. Both donors have since added other pieces: documents, photographs, and costumes linked to the Bethlen family and letters connected to the Rákóczi war of independence respectively.
Sándor Károlyi presented the Museum with a bridesmaid’s dress that was worn at the Károlyi–Windischgrätz wedding, an important event in the history of Sárospatak. Out of the funds won in the Museum of the Year competition, engravings related to the Rákóczis and a Tamás Konok painting depicting the kitchens at Sárospatak Castle were purchased. Funds for restoration purposes secured from the National Cultural Foundation were devoted to a number of restoration projects, as a result of which pieces of textile unearthed in the castle church in 1964 were preserved. A silver-gilt beaker decorated with the coat of arms of the Mikes family was purchased in 2005 using funds provided by the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage and the Hungarian National Museum; also, a set of kitchen utensils was acquired using funds from the National Cultural Foundation. In 2006, mementoes of the centenary of Ferenc Rákóczi II’s re-burial were acquired by the Museum.

Donors and donations

The Chicago restaurateur Lajos Szathmáry, who went to school in Sárospatak, owned the richest Hungarian cultural history collection in the United States in the late 1980s. He was the most proud of his collection of Kossuth memorabilia. In the early 1990s, he began to look for institutions that would accept the pieces in his collection. In spring 1995, he contacted the Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum and indicated his intention to place the best pieces in his Kossuth collection with it. He did not live to see the realisation of his plan since he passed away in 1996. In accordance with her husband’s will, his widow donated 111 artefacts to the Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum. A good number of the books she handed over were published in the mid-nineteenth century. They mainly cover Hungarian history and Lajos Kossuth’s work; some are publications of his speeches and others appeared in connection with the regent-president’s tour of the United States. Among the pictures, some lesser-known representations of Kossuth and illustrations from contemporary newspapers are to be found. An especially noteworthy piece in the collection donated to Sárospatak is the ship’s log of the United States warship Mississippi, on which Kossuth sailed to America. Captain Long recorded the arrival on board of the Kossuth family and other Hungarian refugees on 10 September 1851. In the correspondence, we find letters written by Kossuth from America, Britain, and Italy during his years abroad. The artefacts are generating a revival of the Kossuth cult.
The composer Ferenc Farkas had many ties to the Rákóczi Castle at Sárospatak. On the one hand, he spent time at the Guest House for Creative Artists there; on the other, several of his compositions relate to the theme of Rákóczi and his kuruc supporters. The Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum has consciously adopted the mission of the Guest House for Creative Artists. It is open to every branch of the arts and provides a venue where artists connected to Sárospatak can exhibit their works. The so-called Temple of the Muses opened in 2003, in the building, now restored, of the one-time Trinitarian monastery. It is the place where we can find the Ferenc Farkas Memorial Room, containing personal effects of the composer that were donated to the Museum by his son András.
Dr. Ferenc Bethlen, a retired university professor, lives in the United States. Aware of the role his family has played in Hungarian history, he has in recent years sought to place objects and documents preserved by him with a Hungarian public collection. He has connections with a number of institutions in our district as well, and follows the work of the Rákóczi Museum with attention. In 2003, his father, Dr. Pál Bethlen, donated the Museum the scabbard of a ceremonial sabre. The piece shows similarities with a stiletto (preserved in the Hungarian National Museum) that is linked to the name of an earlier Ferenc Bethlen and dated to the seventeenth century. The pieces probably come from the same set. Dr. Ferenc Bethlen has been enriching our collection with donations since 2007. The majority of these are connected with his parents (costumes, attorney’s certificate, photographs). According to the family Bethlen our new periodical exhibition opens on the 20th May 2010., called The Bethlens,- From the prince's diplomat till the XX.th century University teacher.- It will be open till 29th August, 2010.
In 2003, the collector Dr. Ferenc Nagy, who lives in Vienna, presented the Museum with a Rákóczi letter; this was followed in 2005 by three historically significant documents from the Rákóczi period.
The Sárospatak Castle and its estates passed into the possession of Prince Lajos Windischgrätz in 1875. With regard to the wedding of Princess Mária Magdolna Windischgrätz and Count István Károlyi held on 8 July 1930, many sources survived. At the ceremony, which took place at the Sárospatak Castle, a young girl wore a bridesmaid’s dress which Sándor Károlyi, one of the couple’s children living in the United States, has now donated to the Museum.

The Archaeological Researching of the Cannon Foundry in Sárospatak

In the summer of 2006, the Rákóczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum began a planned excavation in the southwest corner of the Outer Castle in Sárospatak. The purpose of the research was to unearth and document the remains of the cannon foundry that used to exist there. This foundry operated very intensively between 1631 and 1648, in the time of György I Rákóczi. Rich source material has survived from this period; it was collected and published by Mihály Détshy in the early 1970s. As well as the historical sources, geophysical research conducted in the park of Sárospatak Castle also assisted in the topographical identification of the foundry, which had become completely covered by earth. In the study, the author summarises the most important findings available, concerning the archaeological excavation, which is still under way.

In the course of the work performed so far, some 75–80 per cent of the foundry-complex, which consisted of many rooms and which covered a large area, has been unearthed. The remains of a large reverberatory furnace (air furnace) came to light with a firebox, hearth, and, in front of it, a walled drainage shaft of the type generally used across Europe in the seventeenth century in the smelting of bronze. At present, these remains are almost unique, even in European comparison. We managed to reconstruct the destroyed details of the Sárospatak reverberatory furnace on the basis of descriptions in treatises on ordnance and of depictions of furnaces featuring in these. In the study, principally on the basis of the international specialist literature published on the subject, a brief survey may be read on the technology used in the casting of bronze cannon in the seventeenth-eighteenth century, including an explanation of the principle behind the reverberatory furnace and a short outline presentation of the process of making moulds for cannon.

During the excavation of the cannon foundry in Sárospatak, an enormous quantity of archaeological finds came to light, one characteristic group of which could be linked directly to the activity carried on there. When the environs of the foundry were excavated, assemblages of finds linkable to every characteristic phase in the technology of making cannon were unearthed: mould patterns and moulds made from clay; pieces of copper, tin, and lead intended for casting; bronze which had overflowed from moulds; graphite bricks from destroyed hearth parts; and also a few fragments of cast cannon. Scientific investigation and archaeometric assessment of these assemblages of finds were performed at the University of Miskolc and at the Research Institute for Geochemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. During the research of the inside part of the foundry, tool finds lined to the work carried on there came to light.

Mention should be made also of the significant number of ordnance finds: handguns, glass and iron grenades, shot, and shell. In the spring of 2010, the excavation will continue, and at the same time the conservation and stabilisation of the building remains found will be made, as well as the fashioning of a new provisional structure to cover and protect them.

‘Temple of the Muses’

One of the most significant historical monuments in the castle quarter in Sárospatak is the cloister of the Trinitarians, an order for the ransoming of captives, at the entrance to the castle garden.
Data in documents attest to the seventeenth-century origin of the edifice. It first features in the sources as a ‘large, new stone building’, which was originally built as stables, with living accommodation. Tamás Királydaróci Debreczeni – prefect under György Rákóczi I – lived in this building up to his death. The building was used to host the wedding breakfast of Zsigmond Rákóczi, son of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy, and Henrietta, daughter of the Elector of the Palatinate, in 1651.
After the deaths of Henrietta and Zsigmond, the building was not used for the holding of court. Its function was now that of a counting house and grain store. Later it was passed into the possession of the treasury and was used as a granary. In 1693, Ferenc Rákóczi II and his sister Julianna offered it to the Austrian provincial head of the Trinitarian order, for the establishment of a cloister in Sárospatak. Because of the freedom struggles in the early eighteenth century, building work began only in 1728; it was completed in 1734. The finished monastery and church were home to five to seven monks. In 1783, after scarcely fifty years of the monastery’s operation, Joseph II ordered the dissolution of the religious orders, with the result that the Sárospatak monastery, too, was closed down. After the dissolution of the Trinitarian order, the church and the tombs were looted and the building transformed, from the late part of the century on, into a granary and dwellings. During the nineteenth century, a new entrance to the dwellings was made in the north wing. In 1965, the building was restored on the basis of plans drawn up by Imre Makovecz, operating until the 1990s as the Borostyán hotel and restaurant. It was at this time that an extension was built, westwards behind the building; it was in this extension that the kitchens were accommodated.
Prior to the restoration of the building in a manner befitting a historical monument, an archaeological excavation was carried out in two phases. The first was in 1965, on the site of what became the kitchens extension. Traces of a settlement from the Árpádian era (outside ovens, refuse pits) were unearthed there by Zsuzsanna Lovag. In the second phase preceding the restoration, the cellar of the late medieval dwelling house under the south wing of the building (under the church square) was excavated. Taking into account the archaeologicalrecommendations, an authentic restoration of the layers took place.
We restored the eighteenth-century church-monastery layer and its ground plan arrangement by rebuilding the original form of the gallery and by opening an upstairs monastery passage. The sixteenth-seventeenth-century archaeological material brought to light accords with the finds deriving from excavations at the castle. This was proof of their belonging together organically.
The new function achieved during the specialist restoration, namely as the Borostyán Temple of the Muses, provided space for conferences, temporary exhibitions and so on, and restored the historical state of the building.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

The book of the world famous photographer called " History in the Making " was published this December. It is a 323 page book full of unique black and white photo-journals from many fields of life, manly from the warfields of the two World Wars and you can also find family photos and portraits . The volume is introduced by Zsolt K. Horváth's essay. All the photos are commented in Hungarian and English. Nice present for the approaching Christmas or for any occasion. Only 7500 HUF in our museum shop. Enjoy the time travel!

Great atmosphere, amazing nights

Two out of three concerts were held on the court of our castle. The Paganini of Double Bass, Nabil Shehata played in the Calvinist Church because of the bad weather yesterday.

Unfortunatelly I could not attend the opening concert as I spent my summer hollyday abroad, but as I heard there was full house and cheering croud that night.

The Famous Opera Stars, Eszter Sümegi and Jaakko Ryhanen were excellent. It really was an admirable night, cool breezes, great acoustics and many people on the yard. I do not want to forget the Honvéd Male Choir and the Dohányi Orchestra Budafok, counducted by Gábor Hollerung who perfectly accompained the two singers. Thank You for them again for that unforgetable night!

Zemplén Arts Days is organised for the 18 th time this year from 7-16 August, 2009. We are overtly proud to see and feel that the festival's popularity is constantly rising among visitors and people living in the region alike. There will be three concerts held on the court of the castle.

The Opening Concert on - 7 August, Friday 20.00 Pm. - The MR Symhony Orcesra. - They gained recognition among top symhony orcesras with innumerable concerts both in Hungary and abroad performing and recording almost the entire symhonic and oratorical repertoire. They fregularly play at the final and gala concerts of international music competitions. Leading international critics praise the ensemble for their balanced, sound flexibility, and for fostering contemporary Hungarian composers by playing and recording their works. From January 1st, 2009 Stephen D'Agostino is the chief conductor of the orcestra.

On 9 August, 2009 Sunday 20.00 Pm. - Opera Stars- Two celebrated opera stars of our days are the protagonists of this evening. Eszter Sümegi is the most briliant representative of the Hungarian dramatic soprano tradition, who has sung almost all important title roles on international stages. The finnish Jaakko Ryhanen is perhaps the most remarkable singer in the relatively rare deep bass register today. The programme of the evening includes excerpts from the masterpieces of Italian Romantic opera literature: the most popular overtures, arias, duets, choirs from Puccini's Tosca, Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Verdi's Aida, Don Carlos, Ernani, Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra and The Force of Destiny.

On 12 August, Wednesday, 20.00 Pm. - The Paganini of Double Bass- Nabil Shehata is regarded as the Paganini of double bass. He was born in Kuwait of German- Egiptian parents. Already at an early stage of his musical studies he had participated in many international competitions. He was the first double bass player ever to win the music competition of ARD. He was the first double bass player of the Berlin Philharmonic for several years and he was invited by the most prestigious European Orcestras as a guest soloist. During the past few years his attention turned to conducting. He will also demonstrate his virtuosity as an instrumentalist in the popular and brilliant concerto of the well-known Russian conductor, Sergey Koussevitzky written in 1902.

The Tokaj wine has become an indispensable companion of the festival. This Year again you will have the chance to taste the products of various wineries.

We trust that the programme we are offering this year will be a memorable experience for visitors from the region and returning guests will come to discover Zemplén and the Rákóczi Castle in great numbers. We wish You all a pleasant time by attending these three events.

The Night of the Museums was held on the longest night in 2009. The cold, cloudy, windy weather could not turn the audience down. Various programmes entertained all the visitors. We had chance to meet Czech folk dancers, military performance, fire jugglers and enjoyed the concert of the band called ARASINDA. Thank You for coming. See You next year if not earlier.

History of the Castle

Sárospatak is situated in the northeastern corner of Hungary, at the foot of the Zemplén Hills and on the edge of the Great Hungarian Plane.
The town, spread on both sides of the river Bodrog, is known for its famous schools and hence sometimes is referred to as the Athens on the river Bodrog. The attractive natural environment of the town, its history and historic monuments, and its closeness to three foreign borders make it an ideal destination for tourists.
The territory of the town belonged to the crown from the eleventh century on, with a royal manor-house, chapel, and a market place at the shallows on the Bodrog, as the centre of the estate.
There is knowledge of earlier fortifications with reference to Patak in their name, these, however, did not stand here. The present castle was built when the estate went into the possession of Peter Perényi, keeper of the crown, after the battle of Mohács. He had the centre and the southern section of the mediaeval town fortified by walls, a moat, and bastions. His new residence with a donjon was built in the southeast corner of the new fortification. Between 1534and 1537 Péter Perényi had the Red Tower and the adjoining fortifications built(inner court) and by 1541 the town walls were also finished. The evidence of certain stoneworks finds suggesting that east palace wing was started by him in 1540 and finished by his son Gábor Perényi in 1563.
The latter with the late Renaissance carved stoneworks and ornaments is an outstanding and unique architectural example of that era in Hungary. In the course of time, the castle was repeatedly rebuilt, and redecorated, thus yielding to new demands and the change of taste.
The golden age of the castle was the seventeenth century. At this time it became, as part of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy’s dowry, part of the Rákóczi estate, and as such, the centre of political resistance. By the beginning of the seventeenth century members of the Rákóczi family were among the leading politicans of the country. They possessed vast estates in Transylvania and northern Hungary. For five generations they were Princes of Transylvania and for almost a hundred years they ruled over Patak.
Under György I. Rákóczi, and his wife Patak was the seat of the principality. In 1642 the reception room with the Turkish ceramic tile decoration was built, a year later the principal rooms on the second storey of the south wing were finished, while the Lorantffy loggia was completed in 1646, and the outer fortifications were strengthend.
István Bocskai, Gábor Bethlen, Comenius were guests here, and important historic events took place within its walls. Among others, zhe Wesselényi conspiracy in the Sub Rosa room, the wedding of Zsigmond Rákóczi and Henriette of Pfalz should definitely be mentioned, but the Kurucz uprising in the Tokaj region, or the 1708 national assembly of the Rákóczi war of independence are also closely related to the castle.
The present appearance of the building was formed during nineteenth century renovations carried out by the Betzlheim family, owners at the time, in the Romantic-Historic style of the day. The last proprietor was the Windischgraetz family who used the place till 1945. After 1950 the building was turned into a museum, and has become the number one Rákóczi shrine in the country.
